What to Expect

This exclusive expedition is designed for HMNH members and friends who are interested in learning about the history, culture, and natural history of Kenya. This is a moderately active program and involves walking over uneven ground, including at night with the aid of a flashlight. On two occasions we stay in a private tented camp that is exclusive to our group. Bug-proof well-appointed walk-in tents for single or double occupancy have real beds with clean sheets and chairs for lounging. Each tent has its own private toilet and hot shower tent. There is a large dining tent set near the campfire where a variety of delicious meals, including fresh baked bread are served from the “bush kitchen.” Wine is included with dinner. The camp staff about equals the number of travelers for very attentive service. Local Samburu and Maasi warriors protect the perimeter of our camps, and our well-educated native driver/guides join the guests at meals for extensive conversations about growing up in their traditional cultures as well as natural history discussions. No electric generator drowns out the sounds of Africa. The camps are lit with battery and kerosene lanterns. However, camera batteries can be recharged from the vehicles. The experience of staying in these private, mobile camps is always a highlight of the program.
