Summary
Discover the roots of the Mingei Movement and experience the full range of Japan's craft and folk art traditions on this custom tour. Our small group (16 passengers max) will visit the original Mingei Museum, the Nihon Mingeikan, and see the homes, studios and works of influential first and second-generation Mingei artists including textile designer Keisuke Serizawa and potters Tatsuzo Shimaoka, Shoji Hamada, and Kawai Kanjiro. We'll explore traditional Japanese gardens, visit a stunning 17th-century castle, watch a Kabuki performance, spend a night in temple lodgings and experience Japan's most revered Shinto shrine. We'll also view spectacular contemporary art and architecture on an overnight stay at Tadao Ando-designed hotel-cum-museum and visits to I.M. Pei's Miho Museum, the Isamu nogushi Garden Museum, and a museum devoted to the works of Niki de Saint Phalle.
