Summary

The historic era we will be involved with follows the 'dark ages' and introduces two centuries (11th and 12th) of extraordinary building with superb churches dramatically enhanced by sculpture and frescoes. Much of this was occasioned by the 'need' of the church to recover the Holy Land from the Muslims in the infamous crusades. Pilgrimages to the Holy Land, particularly to the church of Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain, were the major reason for the building of the churches we will see as we make a clockwise tour starting and ending in Paris. We hope the combination of villages, churches, vineyards, chateaux and lovely landscape will tempt you to join us.
