Day 5: SANTORINI
Sunday, August 03, 2008Be on deck this morning while sailing into the embracing arms of Santorini’s great natural harbor, the result of a massive volcanic eruption about 3,500 years ago. Some link the sunken caldera to the lost city of Atlantis. Ride a modern funicular or a donkey up to the town of Fira. This lovely village is a warren of shops featuring fine gold and jewelry and cafés overlooking the group’s sailing ship moored below. Back on board, the children’s educator continues to engage the kids while the adults explore their own topics. (B,L,D)

Day 6: ASTIPALAIA
Monday, August 04, 2008Astipalaia is rich in lore with tales of the god Poseidon and Jason and the Argonauts. In sharp contrast to the bustle of Santorini, Skala is a charming town off the tourist route, with whitewashed windmills along the ridges and picturesque Byzantine chapels. The children will love exploring the well-preserved Venetian fortress. Later in a sheltered bay, take the zodiac ashore or swim from the platform at the ship’s stern. (B,L,D)

Day 7: RHODES
Tuesday, August 05, 2008Rhodes is legendary for the 3rd-century B.C. bronze Colossus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, which once straddled the entrance to the port. During the crusades in the 14th and 15th centuries, knights built a fortress city here that is one of the best-preserved medieval walled cities in Europe. Children will love to climb the city walls as they learn about the Knights of St. John. Also visit charming Lindos and walk the cobbled streets before climbing to the Acropolis. (B,L,D)

Overnight in port and enjoy the opportunity to come and go from the ship to explore the old market, which brims with shops. Perhaps choose to dine on your own in town and experience the easygoing contemporary culture. (B,L,D)

Paros has many picturesque churches, monasteries, and windmills, typical of the Cyclades Islands. The day’s excursion around Paros reveals influences of many cultures that vied for control of this strategic location and the source of the translucent marble of the Venus de Milo.
